October 2010 started well with some cracking blues landed for husband and wife team Ronny and Karen Raas from Antwerp in Belgium.
On 01 October they landed 4 blues in total with 2 being over the 2m in length - Karen took the honours with a specimen blue of 2.35m (aprox weight 110lbs) - the fight lasted for nearly an hour on light tackle.
Ronny was close behind with a fish of 2.20m in length whilst the other fish were just under the 2m in length. Garfish, Whiting and Haddock were also landed.
With the weather changing to winter mode it was decided to target Bass and Ronny using live mackerel landed 2 fish around the 2kg mark.
Later in the week saw the arrival of a group from Boulogne sur mer, regulars in Courtmacshery for 20 years or more – the group tried for shark on the Sunday but only managed one run which broke the line - the weather later in the week was not suitable for sharking so they targeted the Bass from the moorings using live sandeel and in 3 sessions they landed 20 fish the heaviest a fish of 3kgs.
With the weather settling down again after the storms of last week everyone is hoping that there are still a few sharks about and indeed the signs are good with the mackerel being caught in abundance just off the pier last night – after all, why would they leave with all that food about!
